Executive Officer Location: Cary Court, Somerton TA11 6SB Salary: £55,801 to £61,198 per annum (SCP 44-48) Vacancy Type: Permanent, 37 hours per week, with evening and weekends Somerton is a historic market town with a strong identity and a council ready for its next chapter. We have priorities to build on, new opportunities emerging, and a community that cares deeply about its place. What we need now is an Executive Officer (Town Clerk) who can help us bring clarity, direction and momentum, someone who can turn intention into organised, confident delivery. About the role This is a role for a leader who enjoys shaping how an organisation works. Your expertise in strategy development will help us refresh the Town Plan, review and align priorities and set out a clear path for the years ahead. You’ll guide the Council through important long‑term decisions, including planning for future cemetery capacity, strengthening governance, and preparing for the possibilities created by future devolution. You’ll also help us make the most of our partnerships, volunteer networks and civic strengths so the Council continues to deliver visible value for residents. It’s a role with real breadth. Some days you’ll be advising elected members on strategic choices; others you’ll be working with staff to keep services running smoothly or progressing practical projects that matter to the town. You’ll bring structure, calm authority and a collaborative approach to a busy, visible organisation, helping Somerton move forward with confidence. If you’re motivated by public service, enjoy leading people and want to add value in a place with genuine character, this is an opportunity to shape a council’s future. About you We’re looking for someone who brings: * Strategic vision and delivery: able to shape priorities, advise elected members with clarity and balance and turn plans into organised delivery and well managed services * Strong governance awareness: confident with systems, compliance, risk and the frameworks that keep a council safe and effective. * Financial confidence: able to oversee a £750k+ budget, plan sustainably and support long‑term decision‑making. * People leadership: able to develop a small team, build trust and work constructively with councillors, partners and volunteers. * Political awareness: comfortable advising elected members and navigating differing viewpoints. * Adaptability: able to move between strategic thinking and hands‑on delivery without losing focus or pace. You don’t need to come from the local council sector - although this would be advantageous. What matters is your ability to lead, organise, advise and deliver — and your commitment to public service. If you want to make a meaningful difference in a town with character and a strong sense of community, this could be the role for you. Benefits: * Local Government Pension Scheme, * Generous annual leave, * Free car parking on site * Support for professional development Closing date: 12pm, Sunday 13th September Interviews: In person between 21st September and 2nd October 2026 To Apply If you feel you are a suitable candidate and would like to work for Somerton Town Council, please do not hesitate to apply
